Detective’s Office to the Sky

My first modular LEGO building was the Detective’s Office, #10246. It immediately got me hooked on this wonderful series of models. After building a few more, it was clear that the detailed and well-composed set of buildings had to be expanded.

After buying another set with a discount, I initially just built another middle floor, intending to sell the rest of the set.

It looked good, but felt a bit too easy, and after some consideration, I began to build a new, upper floor of the brown/blue building.

I decided to add a balcony on the top floor, assuming that the two upper-most floors was a single high-end apartment with kitchen below and living room above. The balcony would use the existing door, which was useful since I did not have any of the dark brown bricks at all.

To add some visual interest, I added some vines on the top floor – parhaps there should be more?

I like how the tall, blue building provides a bit of a high-rise feel, which fits perfectly into my LEGO city of New Arcadia, set in Eastern US around WWII.

The city is inspired by the magnificent model railroad layout, the Franklin & South Manchester made by George Selios. Have a look at some great images and in particular this video – it is most inspiring for both model railroaders and LEGO builders alike!

The only problem with creating buildings of this size is that the rest of the city has to match it. Fortunately, the space used at ground level is the same, no matter how high the building ends up. 🙂
