A Free Equestrian Statue for Bolt Action

When you order models directly from Warlord’s online store, they include a nice surprise gift.

My last order included a couple of French lancers from the Napoleonic Wars, and I really had to struggle not to begin collecting and playing that era as well. Fortunately, I passed my save and resisted! Then I decided to use one of the models as a statue instead.

After assembling the very nice lancer model, I cut some pieces for a base from scraps left over from building the French café.

I had no clear plan, but just kept adding pieces until it felt right.

While building, I figured that the monument might be more useful as terrain if it had some volume. Then it could used as cover for the models, so I made the base larger yet with some balsa wood.

When the whole thing had dried, I painted several layers to hide the different materials and kept filing away anything that looked wrong. Then I added some shading and highlights to make the monument look aged.

I wanted the horse and lancer to be made from aged copper, so I used my favorite colour for that, French Green from Lifecolor, UA 146. It is the perfect colour and just needs a dark grey/black wash and an off-white drybrush to look the part.

Now the French equestrian statue is ready to provide cover for my advancing Germans! It is not perfect, but looks great from a normal gaming distance.

A fun little project made from an almost free gift..
