Modelling with physical objects is very rewarding, especially if your work day is full of digital work. But sometimes modelling in a digital world can be very rewarding as well, as beautiful landscapes and lighting can provide wonderful backgrounds for your work.
In this series of post, I would like to share the progress of the Seventh Castle – a fortress built in creative mode in the game 7 Days to Die.
7 Days to Die is a zombie horde survival and crafting game, that has been a work in progress from its makers for several years now. Once in a while, a major update is completed, providing new inspiration for many of us older player with hundreds or thousands of hours in the game already. Such an update was A17 in December 2018.
The inspiration came from the new terrain generator in A17, which created a wonderful place – hills surrounded by water and mountains – perfect for a castle hideout in European medieval style. The inspiration was enhanced by the wonderful new blocks available in A17 – especially the 1- and 3-wide gothic arches, which provides great new oppurtunities.
My aim is not to create the perfect, invulnerable castle, designed to resist the present zombie AI, but instead to create a thing of beauty.
On the first night, I had layed out the basic plan for the castle, following the hill structure. The small beacons of wood frames show the basic layout.
After wondering where to begin for a long time, I decided to begin with the gatehouse and the bridge to the outside world. The new 3-wide arches makes bridges much easier and better to look at.
The bridge would lead into the gatehouse, where the road would do a 90 degrees turn into one of the towers before heading deeper into the castle.
The new gothic arches improves the look of the towers very much!
The view from the other side – the gatehouse is nearing completion, and new staircases lead both further up the cliff and to the walls, as well and down toward the great hall and the future gardens.
More to come… 🙂
