Building the Ashmore Hotel from Walthers Cornerstone II

Building the Ashmore Hotel from Walthers CornerstoneThe new Walthers Cornerstone kit of the Ashmore Hotel comes with terribly white walls. The texture of large stones with a very fine rough finish begs for a detailed treatment to bring out the details.

I wondered about colors for a long time before finally making a test with one of the new Vallojo washes, namely the dark brown one. The Vallejo washes seems to contain a lot of pigment, adding a lot of color when applied as compared to my homemade washes or the washes from Citadel.

As you can see in the video, it is not important to spread the wash evenly. If you are a bit careless, the individual stones will have different nuances for a more natural look.

After the brown wash had dried, I gave the walls a drybrush with a light tan to tone down the brown color and bring out the very fine texture on the surface of the stones.

Note how there are still subtle differences in the stone color, even after the drybrush.

The next step was the windows. There are a lot of windows…. πŸ™‚

Above are less than half of the windows needed for the lower eight floors, cast in a medium brown color.

To get rid of the plastic shine and seperate my version of the Ashmore Hotel from everyone elses, I decided to paint them a dark green. I used Soviet Armour from War Paint, which works very well.

I always spray paint in an open window in our back staircase in order to get rid of the dangerous fumes as quick as possible.

While the windows dried, I had time to work on the ground floor.

I decided that a dark color would give the skyscraper a suitable foundation and used a dark grey for the stone and gloss black for the windows, door and storefronts, highlighted by a bit of gold!

Over the doors I will add a sign with the hotel name.

One of my favorite parts of the building proces is when the facades are almost complete, so I can get an idea of how the finished building will look like.

The next step will be to paint the base for the hotel and the small brick house next to it,as I wrote about in the previous post. Then I can assemble the lower eight floors and start working on bracing the structure from within.

The kit from Walthers Cornerstone includes some nice interior detail for the two lower floors. It saves a lot of work when that is included and it is a lot of fun trying to construct a realistic interior.
